Polio Plus Update

March 3, 2012 by CarlaR Leave a Comment

The following is an excerpt of an email from John Germ, Chair, Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge Committee and Bob Scott, Chair, International PolioPlus Committee dated January 17, 2012 . . . .

This afternoon at the International Assembly, we had the pleasure of announcing that the Challenge has surpassed the US$200 million mark and has raised US$202.6 million as of 17 January 2011.

In addition Jeff Raikes, Chief Executive Officer of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was at the Assembly and announced that the Gates Foundation has awarded The Rotary Foundation an additional US$50 million grant for polio eradication.  The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant; it results from Rotary’s early achievement of the $200 million milestone and of the need for continued funding support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

We must remember, however, that this achievement is just one more milestone in our journey to eradicate polio. Most importantly, our ultimate goal is the certification of the eradication of polio. Rotarians are continuing to raise funds for the challenge, which officially concludes on 30 June 2012, and as Rotary leaders, we should encourage their continued involvement. We are confident that we will far exceed our $200 million goal, just as Rotarians have done in all previous campaigns.

Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do to help us reach our ultimate goal, the certification of polio eradication. Together we will End Polio Now.
Best Regards,

John F. Germ, Chair                                     Robert S. Scott, Chair

La Victoire School is Inaugurated!

October 23, 2010 by Vivid Image Leave a Comment

October 15, 2010: With prayers, speeches by government and school officials, and over 70 people in attendance, the La Victoire Public Secondary School was inaugurated on Monday, October 11, 2010. The whole event took about three hours, and the turning over of the keys to the school was quite a ritual. The keys were passed from one group to another, starting in the hands of Haiti Outreach Community Development Manager Roge Michel and Project Manager Isaac Desloches to eventually end up in the hand of the school administrator. Part of the ritual was “blessing” the keys by dousing them in champagne.

Officials present and speaking were: Ministry of Education Director of the Northern Department Theordoare Holair, School Inspectors Eurimarque Jean Francois, Doclanienar Servolard, and Pierre Clodorick, Senator of the North Department Alcmoise Nahoon, Deputy of Pignon, Rankit, La Viktwa Nelson Hidson, Reverend Jaksin Pere, Director of San Raphel School Sireus Joseph, Director Jean Francois Alcima of Rankit, La Victoire Community Platform Representative Paster Louis-souffrance Canot, and Mayor of LaVictoire Thelusmond Norbert. Also in attendence were two Caribbean Radio staff who apparently were doing a live radio broadcast of the event.

La Victoire School Inaugeration, HaitiEach speaker discussed the activities behind the realization of the school: the time involved, the formation and development of the community committee, the property issue, and the actual school construction. They then officially announced the day the school will start to be put into use: Monday, October 18. There was also a meal served following the event. It was a great celebration for this community. They now have their own public secondary school building so that over 400 teenage children will have the opportunity to continue their education. Without this school, either the children would not be able to complete their education, or they would have to travel long distances to live in a different community, with their parents having to pay for that significant extra expense that very few could afford.

We are very grateful to our many supporters who made donations to make this school possible, and particularly to many Rotary Clubs and the Rotary Partnership for Haiti Committee that worked for two years to raise the money to make this school a reality! Mesi – thank you all!

Ground Breaking for our School in Haiti!

April 18, 2010 by Vivid Image Leave a Comment

Friends -

La Victoire School Groundbreaking #2I am very pleased to tell you that last Friday, April 9, the contractor broke ground for the La Victoire Public Secondary School! I am attaching just a few pictures that I received today. I don’t have a lot of details yet, but you can see the students there in prayer and the community around, and the trenches beginning for the foundation, etc. I will send others as progress is being made. By contract it should be done in 2 1/2 months, which means near the end of June. Ron Axel and I have been talking about having a Rotary trip, along with any one else who might want to join, to make the desks and blackboards, as well as possibly inaugurating the school, likely in June. You will hear more about that soon once plans are solidified.

Let me know of your interest and availability ASAP.

La Victoire School Groundbreaking #3The groundbreaking of the school was delayed 2 – 3 weeks because at the last minute, there was a dispute about whether or not the land was legally donated to the community where it was going to go. It turns out it was NOT legally donated, and so the mayor and his extended family graciously donated land they owned which is very close to the previous land. So while we lost some time while their land deed got changed, it has now been resolved and is underway. That is why you did not hear from me for a while about this. I was waiting to hear if and when they would sort all this out. It actually galvanized the La Victoire community even more when they found this out, so it was not all bad in the end.

Rotary club of Hutchinson raises $3,700 to help eradicate polio worldwide

October 2, 2009 by Vivid Image Leave a Comment

As part of Rotary International’s pledge to match, dollar for dollar, a challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation over three years, the Rotary club of Hutchinson raised $3,700 to end polio worldwide at their first annual bowl-a-thon held on Sunday, September 20th at the Hutch Bowl.

Rotary International has been a global leader for over twenty years to eradicate polio from the world.  Thru this current campaign, all Rotary clubs internationally are raising a combined $200 million over the next three years, which will be matched by an additional $355 million through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  With these proceeds, Rotary International and the Gates Foundation have a goal to provide enough vaccines to eliminate polio from the remaining four countries where it is endemic.

“If we all have the fortitude to see this effort through to the end, then we will eradicate polio.”

- Bill Gates

Rotary, a humanitarian service organization with nearly 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas, made polio eradication its top priority in 1985.  As the volunteer arm and lead private sector contributor in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary has since contributed more than $800 million, and its members have logged countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.

Remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio.  Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 a year to less than 2,000 in 2008.  Today, 70 percent of the world’s population lives in polio-free countries.  The Americas were declared polio-free in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000, and Europe in 2002.

Fifty-five bowlers participated on twelve teams for the event in Hutchinson. Prizes for the bowlers were donated by local businesses, and the event was followed by a buffet dinner at Squeaky’s Bar and Grill.  For further information, visit www.rotary.org/endpolio or contact Diana Anderson, President of the Rotary club of Hutchinson at 320-583-5022.
